Also, bailing water out when it’s 21° (Freedom Units) out isn’t fun. And I need to invest in a garden hose because siphon.

The sound of splashing water is frightening when discussing frozen pipes during a record cold snap.

Also, great product GE - almost made it to 7 months.

Wait, I have one of those! Now do I want to go out and do that now or tomorrow.

Also should I go pour some vodka in there to keep it from freezing up?

I don’t think GE actually owns the GE brand for appliances any more. And yes they are shit these days

Use some isopropyl alcohol so there isn’t any sugar content which can cause further problems later. And this way you don’t waste precious vodka.

So it’s just LG and Samsung now? I’ve heard maytag is equally terrible now and a shell of their former prestige.

I don’t have experience but people who own them absolutely rave about Speed Queen washers and dryers. I’m pretty sure they are still an independent company based and built in Wisconsin. GE Appliance is owned by Haier but AFAIK they operate independently. Otherwise it’s basically LG and Samsung now. Whirlpool owns most of the other brands including high end ones like JennAir thar now shares guts with lower end brands but have a fancier trim and a better warranty. One of my fridges is an LG. I was a bit hesitant to buy a Korean brand when I got it 8 years ago but it has been running like a champ and in the garage in more extreme temperatures for 6 of those years.

Yup. Paid almost a thousand dollars for a Whirlpool Duet front load washer many years ago. Thank God I’m a mechanical engineer. That’s the only thing that kept it going as long as it did. Finally junked it and got a Speed Queen. Solid as a rock. I can’t say enough good things about it.

Lol I have a Whirlpool Duet! It has EcoBoost just like a Ford GT! But yeah it’s pretty garbage. I’m also a mechanical engineer and have taken apart my appliances. I can’t imagine owning these things if I had to call a repair person for everything.

this is why I still use my Whirlpool direct-drive conventional top-loader. 15 years and going strong with no issues.

Ive has two duet Front loaders, due to working out of town. The first one has been bulletproof for 10 years, and the 2nd has had 2 issues that were simple fixes in that same 10 years. I’ve always been a whirlpool fan cause I knew I could get parts if needed. But they have been great for me, and actually now that I think about it, my MIL has one as well that’s a couple years newer than ours and it’s been great as well.

Actually this Duet has been pretty good to be honest, though it is only 3 years old and makes some concerning noises. My dryer has been giving me fits and apparently it is a Frigidaire Affinity not a Duet like I thought earlier. Parts have been easy to get but I have taken it apart multiple times.

Walked into my kitchen and heard water running. Went out to the washer to the garage half coated in water, secured the water inlet valves to the washer. Drum was completely full. Bailed it out mostly. Attempted to run a spin/drain routine on the washer and it just sort of *brrrrrrrrrr*. Cut the power. Opened the valves and the drum immediately started filling with water. So I’m thinking a failed inlet valve on the washer itself

that sux. the washer drain froze in my last house, which was in a wall. Ran the washer and it drained, just not into the drain, but in the wall and down into the basement.

It’s not just washers. The display went out on our almost one-year-old stove a few weeks ago. There was just three weeks left on the warranty. The repairman replaced the whole board. He suggested we buy a couple of new ones to keep on hand so we wouldn’t have to wait two weeks for parts the next time it happens. We were fortunate that the stovetop controls are separate from the board so the only function we lost was the oven.

Mechanical engineers unite! Ha. I’ve saved many hundreds of dollars too between fixing the fridge and the dishwasher that came with our house. My wife I think resents me though since she wants them to die so they can be replaced.

Much to my disgust and my wife’s content I think we may soon lose the JennAir fridge that came with the house to the rust monster. I can deal with mechanical things but I don’t think I have the patience or skill to strip, Bondo, and repaint a fridge door.

I would have said Speed Queen but even they were not immune to the whole HE-washer thing. The 2017 models were the last true Speed Queen units at this point.

Can I get my Unimatic back? Anyone?

Let me know if you need one of the shock absorber thingies. I still have a new one in the garage that I bought as a spare. I always kept one on hand as they constantly failed. A broken “spider” (I think that’s what it’s called) finally did it in.
